Frequently Asked Questions

90% of aging adults want to remain in their homes and communities as long as possible. However, caring for a dependent adult can strain caregivers and cause them to consider alternative care solutions at assisted living or nursing home facilities. River House not only serves the needs of our participants, but provides essential relief to caregivers and families. Below are some of our most frequently asked questions:

  • River House is a medical model adult day center that provides dedicated support for aging adults who have lost a degree of independence, but still wish to enjoy social and recreational activities. We provide a safe and comfortable environment for those who don’t require full-time nursing care or assisted living.

  • A medical model adult day center has a licensed nurse and certified aides to provide hands-on assistance and attention to a variety of health related needs. At River House, there is always a registered nurse on site to attend to your loved one. Whether it’s to administer medication, provide medical monitoring, or give personalized care to every participant, our staff works with doctors and care teams to ensure they receive consistent, quality care at all times. While at River House, every participant is assured that their specific medical needs are met, even those with conditions such as advanced dementia, diabetes, stroke recovery, vision and hearing loss, or other chronic conditions.

  • River House provides a safe, social environment to form meaningful friendships and engage in stimulating activities. As a medical model facility, our nurses provide personalized care for every participant. Our programming is designed to foster well-being and improve a participant’s life both at and outside of River House. Overall, this can reduce feelings of loneliness, and enhance cognitive function. Every participant will benefit from individualized care addressing their specific medical and personal needs.

  • River House is best for aging adults who wish to maintain some independence but are unable to stay home alone all day. This can include individuals with physical or cognitive limitations, those who require assistance with daily tasks such as eating or personal hygiene, or those with chronic diseases. River House aims to serve every participant with the individualized attention they need and deserve. We provide reliable, consistent care at a fraction of the cost of dedicated in-home aides or assisted living. Crucially, River House is a place for socialization and community for aging adults who can often feel isolated and lonely.

  • With a 1 to 7 ratio, our staff is with River House participants at all times. In case of an emergency, the nurse will assess the situation and determine the appropriate action. A family member will be contacted immediately. If necessary, 911 is called and the member is transported to their predetermined preference of Greenwich Hospital or Stamford Hospital for evaluation and treatment.

  • Yes, we offer our own escorted, ADA accessible, door-to-door transportation within Greenwich and Stamford. This cost is included in our daily fee. Additionally, we partner with several local transportation providers and can arrange accommodations for individual circumstances.

  • A nutritious morning snack, lunch, and afternoon snack are provided daily. All food service is planned by a registered dietitian.  Special diets are available.

  • Showers and general grooming, including shaves for men, are available at no extra charge. Haircuts and other hairdressing services are available at our beauty salon free of charge thanks to a generous grant.

  • Our secure patio is open during suitable weather for River House members to enjoy outdoor space. Participants can enjoy games and activities in the shade of our large patio umbrellas during beautiful sunny days.
